Management of Reflux After Bariatric Surgery

Dr Leena Khaitan, Director of Bariatric Surgery at the University Hospital, Cleveland, OH describes her approach to patients with gastro-esophageal reflux who previously underwent bariatric surgery. Her workup includes gastroscopy, manometry and radiological assessment. Management includes repair of hiatal hernia, correction of anatomy problems, specially in sleeve gastrectomy and, in selected patients, augmentation of the lower esophageal sphincter with a magnetic device. Dr Khaitan emphasizes importance of training in bariatric endoscopy. During courses organized by the University Hospitals in Cleveland, surgeons and gastroenterologists from all around the World learn how to use endoscopy as a primary treatment of obesity as well as for managing bariatric surgery complications.
